1.29 The Football Badge
I feel like the Squirrels would have heard of football (or at the very least the concept of kicking a ball), before the events of The Football Badge. However, for narrative purposes, this is all new to them.
Round with a football.
Norrie playing hopscotch.
Tag is playing with the cars. Rolly is spinning the spinning top. Betty is reading about the solar system. Happy is building with the blocks. Norrie is having a tea party with a polar bear.
Duggee is at the games cupboard with a ball. He spins it on his finger like a basketball. Tag asks if that’s what they are playing today. Duggee stands on the ball and points at his Football Badge.
Duggee does a few keepy-uppies but loses control of the ball. They had better play outside. Duggee explains the basics of football to the Squirrels and they attempt to understand what to do. Duggee guards the goal and Norrie kicks the ball. She has kicked it the wrong way.
The Squirrels all chase the ball. It rolls past the chickens and comes to a halt in a small divert in the ground. Worm pops out of the hole with the ball on his head. It rolls off and down a hill. The Squirrels continue to pursue it. The ball rolls to a stop at Hennie’s feet. The Squirrels explain that she is supposed to kick it. She does and it continues to move further from the goal. Happy is briefly distracted by a butterfly. The ball comes to rest on Ethel’s trunk. She flings it and it lands on a whale’s blowhole. The Squirrels row out to the whale. As they reach it a spout of water sends the ball back towards Duggee. He is ready at the goal but is briefly distracted by a butterfly and the ball dribbles over the line.
- Referee Duggee.
