1.5 The Rescue Badge
The Rescue Badge marks the debut of another Hey Duggee staple that they have made their own. In this case, the montage to music. Technically the previous episodes (The Hair Badge) have montages, but they are simplistic compared to what they do here and in subsequent chapters. These montages are used to move the action forward by briefly checking in with each character as they perform a task, in this case, building a fire engine.
This is a big episode for Tag’s character development too. Tag is often seen playing with vehicles, and in this episode, he opens with a train and later has a fire engine which is a recurring feature in this episode. Tag’s clumsiness also pops up in this episode as he trips up and rolls through the cat flap in his haste to get to Duggee.
I always think that if you are looking for more subtle humour in Hey Duggee then just watch Roly. He is often doing something different from the other Squirrels. In this episode, he can be seen sleeping while Duggee is showing them a graph, blowing bubbles while everyone else helps build the fire engine and hanging off the ladder as the other Squirrels carry it.

Start
Roly and Norrie are having a tea party. Betty and Tag are playing with cars. Tag is playing with a fire engine.
Set-Up
Tag is busy playing with his fire engine and doesn’t run off to see Duggee with the other squirrels. He notices Enid the cat chasing after a naughty mouse. The mouse gives Enid the run around until she chases it up a tree, at which point the mouse jumps in a lift, leaving Enid stranded. The mouse finds his friends, and they jump in their sports car and drive off. Enid starts meowing, and Tag hears. Tag goes to get Duggee, retracing the route Enid and the mouse went until he falls over and rolls through the cat flap. Duggee is giving the other squirrels a lesson. Tag interrupts to tell them Enid is stuck. Duggee has his rescue badge.

Story
The squirrels come up with ideas to get Enid down, none of them works. Duggee spies Tag’s fire engine and has a plan. They head off to the shed, and a making montage starts. Tag carries wood, Happy is covered in glue, Norrie rolls a wheel, Roly blows bubbles and Duggee hammers, screws and saws and paints. When they finished we find out they’ve made a fire engine which they drive out to rescue Enid. Enid is chilling at the top of the tree when Duggee and the Squirrels arrive.

Get your Rescue Badge
It’s time to play dress-up as a firefighter. Or, if you don’t have a helmet handy, there are lots of other games you can play. You could get a toy cat (or another toy) and rescue it from different situations. I also used this badge as a starting point to discuss fire safety with my children.
