1.4 The Summer Holiday Badge
It is snowing on the opening credits of this the Summer Holiday Badge. It’s the first time the writers show their willingness to play with the format if it adds to the story. Adding snow is a minor change that later episodes take to the extreme. The day off badge is a good example of this
The story itself follows a format that is common in early episodes. A supporting character has a problem, and the squirrels try to help. The stories are starting to get a little more intricate though and we are treated to another montage as the Squirrels help to find the toothbrush. Happy even has an arc in this story from his early suggestion that they need balloons to go outside through to a helpful suggestion at the end of the episode.

Opening Squirrel
Norrie playing the ukelele.
Start
It’s snowing as the Squirrels are dropped off by their parents. Norrie is having a tea party with a polar bear. The other Squirrels are all playing with the building blocks.
Set-up
Duggee is getting ready to go outside in the snow. The Squirrels get ready to go sledging. They will need:
- Wellies
- Hats
- Gloves
- Scarves
Happy also thinks they will need balloons. They have a wonderful time until a suitcase falls out of the sky. The owner of the suitcase is Mork. He is migrating for his summer holidays, and he has lost his suitcase and toothbrush. The Squirrels search for the toothbrush. Norrie finds it on a snowman. The Squirrels don’t think he has packed enough. Duggee has his Summer Holiday Badge.
Story
They suggest a long list of other items he should take:
- Sunglasses
- Hats
- Beachball
- Suncream
- Swimming trunks
- Games
Happy thinks he should also take balloons but the suitcase is full. The suitcase is now too heavy for Mork to carry while he is flying. Happy has a solution, balloons.

The Squirrels head home in the snow and the Squirrels hula in.

- Duggee has a red cheque coat with matching mittens and hat.

- Roly is wearing a green and blue hat and green gloves.

Get Your Summer Holiday Badge
Unlike Duggee and the Squirrels, I would recommend getting your summer holiday badge in summer, perhaps when you are planning a trip away yourself. One fun activity you could do to get this badge is a scavenger hunt based on the items the Squirrels suggest Mork needs to take with him. This badge is also a great starting point to discuss migration. You could talk about different animals that migrate, how far they travel and why they go.
